What is Reiki?

There is a life-force energy that flows through and connects all living organisms. In essence, all life and all matter are composed of this energy. Quantum Physics refers to “Zero Point Energy,” the Chinese call it “Chi,” Ayurveda speaks of “Prana” and the Japanese have named it “Ki.” Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese word that means “Universal Life-Force Energy.” Since Reiki is “universal energy,” it can be used for all purposes, conditions and situations. Reiki was re-discovered in the 1800’s by Dr. Mikao Usui in Japan. Dr. Usui was a Buddhist monk who dedicated his life to the study of hands-on healing methods. A Reiki practitioner connects with this universal energy and channels it to the client. This energy creates a feeling of peace and deep relaxation while assisting the body with its own innate powers of healing. Reiki restores balance on a physical, mental and emotional level. It promotes a deep healing of the body, mind and spirit.
What is a Reiki session like?
During a Reiki session, the client lies fully clothed on a comfortable massage table in a tranquil setting. Using a gentle touch, the Reiki practitioner will channel energy to key positions in and around the body. A typical session lasts approximately one hour. While the effects vary among individuals, most people experience deep relaxation.
What are the benefits of Reiki?
Reiki complements and enhances all types of medical treatments. It helps relieve stress, discomfort and pain. It creates a feeling of calmness, well-being, mental clarity and spiritual connection. Reiki aids healing in virtually every known illness and injury. Every person responds differently to Reiki. Some results are subtle while others are dramatic. The best way to know that Reiki works is to experience it.
Reiki is currently being utilized in hospitals and hospice care worldwide. The National Institutes of Health has established the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM). Some recent NCCAM supported studies have been investigating Reiki and specifically, its effectiveness in treating people with fibromyalgia, advanced AIDS, prostate cancer and Type 2 diabetes.
Disclaimer: Reiki does not take the place of medical care. It is recommended that you see a licensed physician or health care professional for any physical or psychological ailment you may have.

My Personal Reiki Story

My first experience with Reiki was in 2003 when I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. My rheumatologist, Dr. Arthur Brawer, suggested that I try Reiki Therapy as a complementary alternative treatment for my pain and inflammation. During my first Reiki treatment, I felt deep relaxation and profound pain relief. After that, I was hooked! I continued with regular Reiki treatments and I no longer have any symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and I am not taking any medications. In addition, Reiki has deepened my connection to spirit and complements my daily practice of Yoga and Meditation. I have found Reiki truly effective in assisting healing on every level; emotionally, physically, and spiritually.
I began my own Reiki training with Reiki Master Donna Keeney in Toms River, New Jersey in 2004. I became certified as a Reiki Master in 2006. I currently teach Reiki classes as well as facilitate therapeutic sessions at The Crystal Lotus Meditation & Wellness Center.
